OpenUI is an open-source rendering specification for LLM-generated interfaces. It allows AI agents to generate structured UI elements like charts, tables, cards, and forms instead of returning plain text responses.

Why do most AI agents still return text instead of UI?

Many AI products still rely on chat-style interfaces designed for text responses. Even though models can reason and analyze complex data, the interface layer often hasn’t evolved to render structured UI elements.

Why is JSON difficult for LLM-generated interfaces?

JSON is verbose and rigid, requiring strict schema compliance. This increases token usage and often leads to malformed outputs that UI renderers cannot parse reliably.

How is OpenUI Lang different from JSON-based UI generation?

OpenUI Lang uses a code-like syntax instead of strict JSON schemas. Because it resembles programming languages LLMs were trained on, models can generate it more reliably and with fewer tokens.

How much faster is OpenUI compared to JSON-based approaches?

OpenUI reduces token usage by about 67% and enables roughly three times faster rendering compared to earlier JSON-based UI generation systems.

Do developers need to change their design systems to use OpenUI?

No. OpenUI is design-system agnostic, meaning teams can bring their own components, tokens, and UI frameworks without being constrained by a predefined schema.
